"Science in the Public Service" Campaign Newsletter

The "Science in the Public Service" campaign won the second-runner up in the "Partnership Award" in the Civil Service Outstanding Service Award Scheme 2007. The award was voted by all LegCo and District Council members and was presented by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang on 13 September at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The "Partnership Award" aims to recognise departments that have succeeded in achieving notable service enhancement through collaboration with others. This award signifies the recognisation of departments' joint efforts in serving the public. In the future, we will continue to be citizen-centric and strive to improve public service with the application of science and technology.

This year, the campaign continues to organize a wide variety of activities, including popular scientific talks, visits and exhibits on loan, to let people know more about scientific work of various government bureaux and departments, and the application of science and technology in providing services. The "Talks at Schools and Exhibits on Loan" activity is highly popular among schools, with applications received from around 70 of them. The campaign also participated in the "Innovation Expo 07" from 14 to 18 September 2007. The event was organized by the Innovation and Technology Commission.

Partners of the campaign also accept interviews by the Hong Kong Economic Times (Sci-Tech Corner). The sharing of partners' experience and achievements in the application of technology will enhance the knowledge of young readers of the newspaper.

A student project competition has started. The theme is "Climate Change - What can we do?". Through activities involving information collection, research and analysis, the competition aims at strengthening students' scientific thinking, critical reasoning and communication skills. Deadline for submission is 31 January 2008.

The campaign will hold "Lecture Series for Senior Management" for senior government officers in October and November. The event is co-organized by Census and Statistics Department and Civil Service Training and Development Institute. Apart from the latest scientific developments, the lectures will particularly highlight how the various scientific topics will impact on policy or decision making.
