"Science in the Public Service" Campaign Newsletter

Since the commencement of the Campaign in January, a series of activities have been organized including the Joint Exhibition and Scientific Lectures held in the Central Library. Over 10,000 people attended the Joint Exhibition and the topics covered by the Scientific Talks also attracted widespread coverage by the media. Furthermore, the activities also included scientific talks and visits to departmental facilities. Altogether over 500 people attended the talks and visits between January and March. Moreover, the Campaign also received applications for school talks and exhibits on loan. About 20 schools expressed interest and their applications have been followed-up. All in all, the comments we received from the public about the Campaign have all been positive.

On 27 April, over 300 people attended the Symposium at the Science Museum. The Symposium was co-organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Science and the Organizing Committee of the "Science in the Public Service" Campaign. Altogether fifteen colleagues from various government departments presented their scientific research work. The audience was also enthusiastic in raising questions during the Q&A sessions.

At the same time, from 16 April, a programme called "A New Scientific Hong Kong" is on air every Sunday night from 8:30-9:00 on RTHK Radio 1. The programme consists of over 10 episodes, with the scientific work of various departments introduced in the form of a drama. As civil service colleagues recount their personal stories in their scientific pursuits, the programme has proved lively and easy to listen.

The Campaign also organizes an essay competition for students. The essay competition is aimed at reinforcing public understanding of the application of science and technology in the provision of public service in Hong Kong. It is also expected to enhance students' abilities to explore and their quest for knowledge.

Details of the Campaign activities can be found at http://www.science.gov.hk.
